Jet Set Radio was designed for the Dreamcast, although a version of the game was later released for Game Boy Advance with the same name. The game begins in Shibuya-cho, and is introduced by Professor K , the DJ of a pirate radio station based in Tokyo-to, who explains the basics of life in Tokyo-to for a "rudie", the term he uses to refer to young people who roam the streets spraying and skating.
The city is split into three parts -- Shibuya-cho, Benten-cho, and Kogane-cho, each of which corresponds to a different time of day. Shibuya is a shopping district full of blue skies and daylight, Benten a nocturnal entertainment spot that represents night, and Kogane a mostly residential area, built on the water, where it is perpetually sunset.
The player starts off forming a skate gang which also resides in Shibuya-cho, and thus forms a rivalry between the gangs in the area. The soundscape was fuller and there was more variation with both the textures and the sound clip usage. Easy call now. That criticism aside, mixing is good, arrangement progression is good and mix duration frames the content appropriately. Plus, it's just really damn funky; somebody call the CDC, because this one's downright infectious.
It's almost like a new, updated track for the sequel we might never see, and in that sense might offer some catharsis for longtime fans. Either way, GCJ has the skills to deliver the thrills for this particular genre, and grinds it up but good; enjoy! Ohhh, so dope! He managed to maintain the crazy vibes of the original, while bringing a new dose of freshness and funk to the table. Jurassic 5's "Improvise" is a clear standout.
Jurassic 5 is one of my favorite hip-hop groups, and "Improvise" is one of their best singles, which fits surprisingly well within the game, and amongst the other tracks. Mixmaster Mike's "Patrol Knob" is a underground hip-hop instrumental track with excellent scratching. Even if you have no intentions of ever picking this Dreamcast classic up, you would be doing yourself a favor if you gave the soundtrack a chance.
