They reinvented Kriol the synthesis of Portuguese and African languages spoken in the cities into the language of national unity. Their success was almost immediate.
In the band went for its first recording sessions in Lisbon, and blazed through 6 hours of tape. It was probably "Pamparida" that filled a stadium in Senegal to capacity, where a then-unknown Youssou N'Dour opened for the Orchestra.
When the music started, the crowds outside literally broke down the doors to hear Mama Djombo play. Bissau-Guineans of all generations know these songs by heart. Posted by Jillem on Wednesday, November 29, South Bronx, New York. There is a term that record collectors like to use to describe those pieces of exceedingly rare vinyl they especially covet: ''holy grail.
Recorded ''on a warm day'' in a single studio session, and released - to the best of the surviving band members' recollections - in , it's the lone official album from a legendary South Bronx street gang turned activist community organization. The Ghetto Brothers, a community organization dedicated to bridging the ever-increasing gap that exists between society and minority groups, believe music to be the common language of the world.
Through music, they are able to inform society of the plight of the 'little people' in their quest for recognition. Therefore, the music of the Ghetto Brothers serves as a way of communication. If the Ghetto Brothers' dream comes true, the world will learn that the 'little people' wish to be acknowledged; wish to be properly educated in order for them to pass on their knowledge to their children and proudly inform them about their heritage and culture, and be a functioning part of the growth of America.
If the Ghetto Brothers' dream comes true, the 'little people' will be 'little people' no more, and make their own mark in this world. Listen to the Ghetto Brothers……. The Taliban-controlled areas of Afghanistan have a better reputation for safety. The remarkable story of the Ghetto Brothers proves it. While some of its members no doubt had their shady dealings, together they aimed to bridge the gap between gang life and community activism.
They brokered peace deals between rival gangs, chased out junkies, and promoted Puerto Rican pride. They even made music — sweet, sweet music, it turns out. During the course of one hot summer day in , various Ghetto Brothers recorded a down-and-dirty disc — the only recording ever made by guys who continued performing live for decades.
They live up to that legacy with a true command of tunes and harmonics. In English, they sound more boyish, in Spanish, more bold. Labels: Ghetto Brothers - Power-Fuerza. This is an amazing reissue of two ultra-rare late s extended roots rockers tunes. The reissue itself is already a rare goodie, but make sure to grab the 12" - it's worth it!
Import re-press from New York combining two killer roots tunes back to back, belly to belly. Freddie McKay's title is also known as Exodus, a self-production, it was originally issued in Jamaica circa on the Hi Rank label and was reissued on a 7" a few years ago on Rootical Dubber, this press features a different mind-boggling dubwise mix only ever available on New York's Yah Congo label and highly coveted ever since.
Massive reissue from the Digikiller camp. This is the type of tune that serious heads whispered about when they thought no one was listening. This reissue is beautifully done and strictly limited to pieces Posted by Jillem on Tuesday, November 28, There have been few musicians to ever reach the stature of Hermeto Pascoal.
A true maestro and a cultural icon, he represents the highest level of musical evolution; as a multi-instrumentalist, as a composer, and as an arranger. Hermeto decided he would record with this particular group following a show at Teatro Bandeirantes, during which an almost spiritual musical connection amongst the group was realised.
In the studio, the sound engineer Renato Viola understood that things needed to happen quickly. Almost everything recorded on the first take ended up staying in the final mix. After the mixdown, Lelo Nazario would ask Renato to make him a copy of all the material, from machine to machine. With the tape rescued and restored, this release fills a void in time. Now in his eighties, Brazil's Hermeto Pascoal continues to delight and surprise.
Earlier in he released the universally acclaimed double-length No Mundo Dos Sons, the first album in 15 years to feature his longstanding performing band. These recordings, captured at the peak of Pascoal's most experimental period, are the stuff of Brazilian music legend. These four tunes were recorded live in the studio. This is raw, inspired electric jazz. Most of the first-take material remained in the final mixdown.
After completing it, Nazario asked Viola to make him a machine-to-machine copy of the collected sessions. Pascoal's restlessness and prolific activity dictated that he move on to other projects -- the classic Slaves Mass would appear in The session was shelved and the master eventually lost. However, Nazario retained his copy; it languished on his studio shelves for more than 40 years.
Have no fear, though; it has been painstakingly restored, and thoroughly remixed and remastered. It is both mystical and pastoral, a long intro for what's to come in six minutes when a drum and piano vamp heads squarely into jazz-funk. Closer "Casinha Pequenina" is more than 26 minutes long and a virtual suite whose ensemble play and improvisation illustrate how confidently Grupo Vice Versa communicated during their short tenure.
Its long, languid harmonic lines eventually morph into a burning modal Brazilian jazz-funk jam with all players particularly Pascoal and Horta on stun -- it rivals early Weather Report in kinetic energy and boundless creativity. The grooves are infectious; tight horn and keyboard lines become longer and more exploratory; they wind back on one another as the rhythm section pushes the boundary of the pocket without sacrificing it.
Soloists emerge and then slip into the backdrop, suspending all sense of time as the work unfolds, revealing previously unexplored sonic territory. Viajando Com o Som is a gem, a true lost classic in the canon of Brazilian jazz, and evidence of Pascoal's well-deserved reputation as O Bruxo "The Wizard". All tracks were originally conceived in the same climate that spawned samba rock and tropicalia yet pages away from the scrutiny of the political dictatorships of the s and very different to the catalogues held by the European majors.
Under those distorted guitars, the indelible indigenous South American influences heard in the percussion and vocal arrangements give these recordings an individuality exclusive to Brazil. None more so than the fuzz-ridden, re-workings of classic national favourites exemplified by Moraes Moreira's version of 'Se Voce Pensa' previously recorded by both Gal Costa and Roberto Carlos. Also in the mix Os Mutantes in a later incarnation to mark the era when prog rock finally landed in South America.
Brazilian fusion master piece. Dense, fascinating and utterly unique. Is a mistake labels this album just as 'psychedelic'. It's much more than this. Strongly recommend. As much a political identity movement as a cultural one, Tropicalia, as it came to be known, artists as a whole were interested in using artistic expression to remove barriers and as a means of enabling other societal freedoms.
A psychedelic concept album based on the four elements earth, air, fire, water , the album was recorded and released in The set is a wonderfully off-kilter record, full of fantastic hooky and strange tunes that range all over the place, from full-on freakouts to quiet and pastoral. The entire range of s hippie Brazilian musician culture is displayed in this record. It's a very atmospheric blend, with sung and chanted vocals no more or less important than any of the other elements, which include classical acoustic and fuzzy electric guitar, piano, organ, flute, sax and a range of percussion.
It's free and psychedelic, but just reigned in enough to keep it tense and exciting. Thanks to cult-creating stories about how nearly all original copies of this Brazilian double-album effort from were lost in a fire, Paebiru is one of those records that has to overcome a reputation -- it has to actually be good because it's good, not because it's rare.
The re-release on Shadoks gave a chance for that concern to be addressed, and it must be said: Paebiru really is a fantastic album.
Elsewhere, the beautiful, almost serene compositions interspersed throughout "Bailado das Muscarias," which definitely is a dance tune regardless of lack of percussion; the blending of harp, flute, sax, and more on "Omm" create something pastoral and with a romantic late-night lounge feeling.
The resultant blend of approaches and the variety throughout the album become more apparent even while each song is simply captivating on its own, and when they decide to conventionally rock out on "Nas Paredes da Pedra Encantada," the result is almost Can-like. Bossa Nova and Samba hit the wilder shores of acid folk-rock on these super-obscure Sixties recordings from north-east Brazil.
Blissed-out ballads, amplified sitar and stoned orgasmic giggling all find a place on a compelling and surprisingly tuneful cauldron of weirdness on which all participants, from musicians to sound engineers, sound completely lost in space. The songs and artists featured on this album are a fittingly schizophrenic selection. Psychedelic Pernambuco finds crazed ethno-punk giving way to tweaked Americana; mystical jungle-folk stands alongside cocaine-fuelled fuzz-rock, and acid-raga trance segues into mutated proto-disco.
